Mindset Matters
We live in an age where we’re constantly consuming everyone’s opinions thanks to social media. When you’re pregnant and planning for birth and postpartum, this can be overwhelming. Open any social app and the floodgates of opinions open: birth story videos, posts telling you what to do or avoid, and people labelling things “dangerous” or “safe.” It’s exhausting.
If your goal is an unmedicated hospital birth, turn off the noise and focus on your mindset—this will be key. I know that sounds like an opinion, but bear with me; this advice is practical and helpful.
Remember when you were a child and afraid to try something? An adult—maybe a parent or grandparent—sat you down, asked what you were afraid of, and talked you through it. By the end of the conversation you probably felt more confident, secure, and at peace. That’s essentially what you need to prepare for birth.
Birth can feel daunting. Add everyone’s negative birth experiences on social media and the fear builds. Instead of feeling confident that you can birth well, you start picturing the scenarios others describe online. What you feed your mind matters.
Do you have someone to talk through your fears with? A doula or a friend who had the kind of birth you want can be invaluable. If not, it’s crucial to find someone.
It’s important to note you can still give birth even if you’re afraid—I did. The more I labored, the less afraid I became.
If you’d like 1:1 support to work through fears and set your mindset on the right track, I’m here to help. Let’s hop on a call and talk it through. I’m rooting and praying for you, and I know you can do this!
